Shudder is offering up so many amazing titles that I want to tell everyone to watch this May. Narrowing it down to five films was difficult because I had to leave off some weird and chaotic titles. Movies like Overlord, which I still think would make an amazing video game if anyone is listening. Also, required viewing like Elvira’s 40th Anniversary, Very Scary, Very Special, Special episode featuring City of the Dead. Those two titles and so much more deserve your attention this month, and I hope you lose as many hours on this horror streamer as I intend to. However, I suggest you start with the five movies below that caught my attention. Let’s make this the wildest month of the year for the Shudder couch potatoes, shall we?
The Best Movies to Stream on Shudder This Month
Lady Vengeance (2005)
A woman seeks revenge after being wrongly imprisoned for 13 years and having her child taken from her. The third installment of Park Chan-wook’s Vengeance Trilogy is another brutal ride from one of our favorite filmmakers. If you enjoyed the first two installments but wanted more femme rage, then Lady Vengeance is for you! Shudder is also adding the first part of this trilogy, Sympathy for Mr. Vengeance. However, you have to rent Oldboy separately if you want the full Vengeance experience. I promise it is worth the money and is a vicious thriller after my heart.
You can watch Lady Vengeance on May 19th.
Pieces (1983)
A killer terrorizes a Boston college campus, targeting co-eds and taking his victim’s body parts to create a human jigsaw puzzle. Not only is this slasher fun and chaotic, but it has a surprise penis mutilation right when you think it has done all it can do. I am so happy Pieces is coming back to the streamer because I need to make so many of my friends watch it. I also love this because I discovered this movie during one of my Shudder Saturdays, where I cruise the app looking for films I have not seen. So, it feels full circle for me to see it on there again as they are celebrating their 10th anniversary this year.
You can watch Pieces on May 5th.
The Surrender (2025)
A tense mother-daughter relationship is stretched even thinner when their patriarch dies, and the mother hires someone to resurrect him. This movie caught my eye because I saw Colby Minifie and Kate Burton in the featured image. I love it when either of them steps into my favorite genre. So, watching them tag team something that looks wicked is a dream. I cannot wait to see how bringing this man back from the dead backfires in sinister ways. I unfortunately missed it in festivals, so I am glad Shudder is letting me see it later this month.
You can watch The Surrender on May 23rd.
Tremors (1990)
A tiny group of small-town locals must fight off giant wormlike creatures destroying their community and eating their neighbors. I have loved Tremors since I was a child. However, this month might be the first time I will see it without commercials or ads. I love Shudder for making this possible and plan to take advantage of it a few times this May. Not only is this horror comedy the fun kind of chaos, but it also has an iconic cast. Where else can you watch Kevin Bacon, Reba McEntire, and Michael Gross fight huge critters?
You can watch Tremors on May 1st.
The Ugly Stepsister (2025)
Elvira is pushed to extreme measures to achieve beauty and capture the eye of a prince. Emilie Blichfeldt’s gruesome retelling of Cinderella, from the eldest stepsister’s point of view, is the only fairytale horror movie I care to talk about. I caught this sick body horror at Overlook Film Fest this year and have been trying to make everyone else see it. So, I’m glad Shudder is dropping it sooner rather than later. I highly recommend watching this disgusting and funny movie with friends. Just make sure no one eats anything they don’t want to see come back up.
You can watch The Ugly Stepsister in May 9th.
As usual, Shudder is giving us that good, scary, and weird business this month. We should expect nothing less from our favorite streamer celebrating its 10th anniversary. Happy streaming to all my fellow weirdos!
