The Best Horror You Can Stream on Shudder in May 2024

As you may have noticed, I’m a Shudder girl. I love the near-perfect blend of old-school titles, new indie films, and buried hidden gems. While the streamer is fun for casual horror fans, it doubles as one of the best places for those who want to study this genre. The app gives me that nostalgic feeling of going to the video store to randomly pick up movies with the wildest covers to see where the night takes me. I love my Shudder Saturdays and love that they give me enough titles every month to keep them going. Here are some films I plan to check out this month, and I think some of you might also want to put them in your queue.

The Best Movies to Stream on Shudder This Month

Blood and Black Lace (1964)

A masked killer murders models in Rome. Aside from my fascination with pre-90s slashers, I’m also really trying to get more Giallo in my streaming diet. I have also realized while listening to Bloodhaus, I haven’t seen nearly enough Mario Bava movies. So, I’m looking forward to using this movie for multiple reasons and cannot wait to finally watch it.

You can watch Blood and Black Lace on May 1st.

Graduation Day (1981)

A masked killer begins murdering a school’s track team members after a runner dies upon completing a 200-meter race. I have a soft spot for 80s slashers, and while I didn’t love this one, I’m excited to watch it without commercial breaks. That’s one of the many perks of being a Shudder subscriber. While we can catch a few of these titles on the free places, it’s sometimes nice to have an uninterrupted hate-watch.

You can watch Graduation Day on May 27th.

The Lift (1983)

A lift technician gets pulled into a dangerous mystery as he investigates the deadly accidents happening in the elevators of a new building. We’re not scared enough of elevators as a society. So, I’m leaning in to see if this title unlocks a new phobia and encourages me to take the stairs for a few days. Another elevator horror movie called Down arrives on the app the same day, so maybe this is the weird double feature I didn’t know I needed.

You can watch The Lift on May 20th.

Mother, May I? (2023)

A woman begins acting like her fiancée’s recently deceased mother, which forces him to confront his past trauma. Even if you’re not the audience for this movie, you must admit that Holland Roden and Kyle Gallner’s performances made it worth the journey. This was my introduction to Roden, it is also part of this era where Gallner’s is only giving award-worthy performances, and I wish they had both gotten some hardware for their work here.

You can watch Mother, May I? on May 6th.

The Strangler (1964)

A lab tech with low self-esteem stemming from his overbearing mother begins killing nurses. I’m excited to see this “psychological thriller film,” because it is giving big slasher energy. I want to know if I’m right, or wrong. I also need to see more horror movies from the ’60s because it’s one of my weakest areas.

Shout out to Shudder for catering to my chaotic and nonsensical needs again. I look forward to losing more weekends on the app this month. I hope some of you also check out these five titles this May.
