It Came From Shudder: September 2023 Edition

Shudder is coming in strong this Halloween season! I see so many movies I love, so many indie films that premiered this year, and a few titles I have never even heard of. I hope you all find someone who looks at you the way I’ll be looking at Shudder all September long. Here are the five things I will watch the second they hit the app!

The Best Movies to Stream on Shudder in September

Perpetrator (2023)

A rebellious teen is sent to live with her aunt. Once there, she discovers that a family spell will cause her to experience some unusual changes. I have been waiting for this movie to land on Shudder for months. I love to see Black girls leading horror movies! Also, I am trying to get as much 2023 horror in front of my eyeballs as humanly possible. I will be hitting play the second my eyes open on September 1st.

The Autopsy of Jane Doe (2016)

Father and son coroners wind up in a terrifying situation when an unidentified woman’s body is brought into their morgue. I have watched this movie two times, and each time proved that I am not as metal as I think. I’m not creeped out easily, but this film messes me up every time. It also has Brian Cox and Emile Hirsch as the (living) leads, so the acting is one of the many things working for this nightmare fuel.

You can watch The Autopsy of Jane Doe starting September 4th.

Relic (2020)

Three generations of women are haunted by something presenting as dementia. As an aspiring older woman, I love to see horror movies about women past their thirties. Also, very here for the idea of real-world things haunting people as supernatural entities. So, this feels tailored to my mood at the moment. It has been on my list for a few years, and I’m happy I get to cross it off this Halloween season.

You can watch Relic starting September 4th.

Elevator Game (2023)

A teen’s sister disappears after playing the elevator game, so he performs the same ritual to find her. I found out about this movie last month and was relieved to see it would be coming to Shudder so soon. I grew up in the 90s, so I will always show up for horror movies where teens make bad decisions. I could also use a bit of motivation to take the stairs, so this movie is right on time.

You can watch Elevator Game starting September 15th.

The Djinn (2021)

A boy is trapped in an apartment with a monster that grants wishes. The idea of being trapped with a monster is less scary than being trapped with people. However, it still sounds stressful. This was an IFC Midnight release, and those are always extra creepy. This is why it’s my life’s work to watch them all, and I am happy to see this one making its way to Shudder.

You can watch The Djinn starting September 25th.
