It Came From Shudder: November Edition

My friends have a running joke that I like movies that “don’t make sense”. Personally, I think I’m just really into surrealism and nonlinear timelines. So, with that in mind here are my picks for what to watch on Shudder for the month of November!

Broadcast Signal Intrusion

I’m interested in pirate radio, so this film really appealed to me. I think it’s an exciting take on TV signal hijacking, as it utilizes surrealism at points to emphasize the mysterious aspect of this phenomenon. The film starts when an archivist notices a strange broadcast. He starts looking into it and finds that the broadcasts may be connected to a conspiracy involving missing women. Broadcast Signal Intrusion was also partially inspired by Creepypasta, folktale-like stories shared and circulated on forums, and if you’re a fan of those, you’ll likely enjoy this movie.

Triangle

This movie is an absolute mind fuck. The characters get lost in a storm out at sea, and board an ocean liner to seek shelter and call for help. They soon realize that the ship is seemingly abandoned, with only them on board. As they explore the ship, it’s clear that something is off, and they believe a vicious killer is stalking them. Triangle has an interesting sci-fi angle that I don’t want to spoil, but I will say there are some chilling tableaus that I enjoyed in this movie.

Perfect Blue

This one is another mind fuck. It follows a young pop idol turned actress as she is exploited by the fame industry. You can never be sure what is real as her experiences on set blur and are interspersed with her real life. I love the aesthetics of 90s anime, and Perfect Blue scratches that itch. It is a product of its time and does some unfortunate stuff with mental health, so take this recommendation with that caveat. Also, trigger warning for sexual assault.

Birth of the Living Dead

I’m a huge dork, so it’d be out of character for me not to recommend a documentary. I’d assume that most people reading this list have seen Night of the Living Dead (if not, do that first). It’s one of my overall favorites, and Birth of the Living Dead is a peak behind the curtain of this iconic movie and a look at George Romero’s career. This is an excellent pick if you want to learn a little about the film industry! It also puts the film in a historical context.

My Heart Can’t Beat Unless You Tell It To

This film is a drama that uses horror to investigate its characters. The setup is straightforward: Three siblings live together, and the two elders are killing people to harvest blood for their younger sibling who needs it to survive. All three characters are trapped in this situation and by their bonds to each other. The film is not very scary, but it made me think about the nature of humanity.

Regardless of your pick, have fun, and stay tuned for more fresh Horror Press recommendations!

As always, all these movies can be found on Shudder, so make sure to check them out!
